Overview

VEIC seeks a detail-oriented Technical Editor to join our dynamic in-house Creative & Digital team. In this role, you'll play a key part in refining and enhancing written materials across a wide range of formats, including business development proposals, consulting projects, regulatory reports, and technical documentation. You’ll work closely with writers, designers, subject matter experts, and marketers to uphold brand and editorial standards, transforming complex or formal language into clear, consistent, and accurate content. While editing is your primary focus, you’ll also contribute original writing—especially in support of proposals, executive summaries, and formal reports. This is an exciting opportunity to shape how critical information is communicated, ensuring clarity, compliance, and impact while supporting our brands and advancing our mission to reduce the economic and environmental costs of energy use.

 

Location:

This is a remote or Hybrid position, and the ideal candidate will be located in the states where VEIC conducts business: CA, CT, DC, DE, HI, IL, MA, MD, ME, MI, MT, NJ, NY, PA, OH, RI, VA, VT, AND WI. Please note that while we welcome applicants from many areas, we do not currently hire in the following parts of New York: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Compensation:

At VEIC, we are committed to pay transparency. The starting pay range for this position will be between $70,000 - $75,000. Based on market data, pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and location. Please discuss your intended work location with the recruiter for more information. The total compensation package for this position also includes a full range of medical benefits, 403(b) eligibility with match, Combined Time Off (CTO), Care and Concern leave, Parental leave, wellbeing benefit, a community service day, and eight paid holidays that are effective as of your first day of employment.

Responsibilities

Editing, Proofreading, and Quality Assurance

  • Review and edit business development proposals, regulatory reports, technical documentation, program materials (such as rebate and eligibililty forms) and for internal and external audiences to ensure clarity, coherence, accuracy, and compliance with formatting and brand guidelines.
  • Edit for consistency of terminology, tone, and structure, particularly across high-stakes documents such as RFP responses and compliance materials.
  • Conduct thorough
  • Proofread materials for grammatical, typographical, and stylistic accuracy.
  • Manage multiple editorial projects with overlapping deadlines, ensuring quality and precision throughout.

Content Creation and Development

  • Guide the structure, logic, and flow of content to strengthen narrative coherence and ensure alignment with project goals and audience needs.
  • Collaborate with writers and subject matter experts to shape early drafts, identify gaps, and refine messaging before the copyediting phase.
  • Draft or revise sections of proposals, executive summaries, or formal reports in collaboration with technical and business development leads.
  • Translate complex or technical concepts into accessible language tailored for evaluators, regulators, or clients.
  • Support the creation and refinement of internal templates, style guides, and boilerplate content for proposals and reports.
  • Assist in shaping messaging and tone for externally facing documents that reflect organizational priorities and values.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Partner with business development, regulatory, marketing, and design teams to produce polished, high-impact content.
  • Work with subject matter experts to clarify content, resolve inconsistencies, and ensure documents meet compliance and proposal requirements.
  • Provide actionable editorial feedback to authors and contributors.
  • Present editing recommendations clearly and diplomatically to stakeholders.

Research, Analysis, and Strategy

  • Stay current on industry-specific regulatory language, proposal trends, and best practices in formal communications.
  • Conduct content audits and quality reviews of past proposals and reports to inform future improvements.
  • Support the strategic positioning of proposals by ensuring persuasive and compliant language throughout.
  • Contribute to the analysis of proposals and report performance metrics when available, incorporating findings into process refinements.

Professional Development and Adaptability

  • Continuously refine editing and writing skills with attention to the evolving standards of regulatory and proposal communications.
  • Learn and implement new tools or platforms that streamline editorial workflows.

Qualifications

  • Strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, and goals of VEIC.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, technical communication, journalism, or a related field, plus 3+ years of experience in technical editing or a similar combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to tactfully and effectively edit a wide range of writers, including senior colleagues.
  • Experience editing and/or writing proposals, regulatory filings, or technical business reports.
  • Experience working in a consulting or client services environment, with familiarity in proposal development, business development writing, and collaborative project workflows.Strong command of grammar, syntax, formatting, and content organization for formal documentation.
  • Comfortable working across a range of style guides, including the Chicago Manual of Style, and understanding of proposal and regulatory formatting conventions.
  • Ability to balance editorial precision with big-picture messaging and clarity.
  • Excellent collaboration and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex projects.
  • Content management systems, document automation tools, or proposal management platforms are a plus.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with evolving needs and responsibilities.
