Overview

We seek a thoughtful and creative User Experience (UX) Designer to join our collaborative in-house Creative & Digital team. In this role, you’ll shape intuitive, inclusive, and impactful user experiences across a range of digital platforms—primarily for our energy efficiency utility websites and our growing consulting portfolio. Projects may include evolving and optimizing existing experiences and leading the UX vision for new website builds. You’ll work from early research through high-fidelity prototyping/wireframing to translate user needs and organizational goals into thoughtful design solutions that reflect our brand and advance our mission to reduce the economic and environmental costs of energy use. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and empathetic problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

 

Location:

This is a remote or Hybrid position, and the ideal candidate will be located in the states where VEIC conducts business: CA, CT, DC, DE, HI, IL, MA, MD, ME, MI, MT, NJ, NY, PA, OH, RI, VA, VT, AND WI. Please note that while we welcome applicants from many areas, we do not currently hire in the following parts of New York: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Compensation:

At VEIC, we are committed to pay transparency. The starting pay range for this position will be between $87,000 - $93,000. Based on market data, pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and location. Please discuss your intended work location with the recruiter for more information. The total compensation package for this position also includes a full range of medical benefits, 403(b) eligibility with match, Combined Time Off (CTO), Care and Concern leave, Parental leave, wellbeing benefit, a community service day, and eight paid holidays that are effective as of your first day of employment.

Responsibilities

User Experience Research and Discovery 

  • Conduct user research through interviews, surveys, usability testing, and competitive analysis. 
  • Translate insights into actionable design recommendations and strategic direction. 
  • Identify and articulate user needs, pain points, and behaviors to inform decision-making. 
  • Facilitate collaborative discovery workshops with stakeholders to align on user goals and project requirements. 

 

UX Design and Prototyping 

  • Develop user flows, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes for both incremental improvements and new digital experiences. 
  • Design accessible, responsive, intuitive interfaces that reflect brand standards and design systems. 
  • Tailor design approaches to the context—whether optimizing existing energy utility platforms or launching new web builds for consulting clients. 
  • Iterate quickly on concepts and designs based on analytics, feedback, and user insights. 

 

Collaboration and Implementation Support 

  • Collaborate with visual designers to ensure that interface aesthetics and usability are seamlessly integrated.  
  • Work closely with developers to ensure accurate translation of designs into functional, responsive websites. 
  • Collaborate with consumer insights specialists, content strategists, marketers, and subject matter experts to shape meaningful and user-friendly digital experiences. 
  • Partner with internal departments (including Data Technical Services, IT, and program teams) to align UX solutions with infrastructure and system capabilities. 
  • Present design concepts and rationale to internal teams and project stakeholders. 
  • Provide UX support during QA and post-launch reviews to refine usability and resolve edge cases. 
  • Design for integration with tools like PowerBI and ArcGIS, and CMS platforms including Craft CMS and Drupal. 

 

Testing, Evaluation, and Iteration 

  • Plan and conduct usability tests and synthesize findings into design improvements. 
  • Analyze user behavior, product analytics, and feedback to identify areas for optimization. 
  • Maintain and iterate on design documentation, patterns, and libraries for reusability and consistency. 
  • Apply UX best practices and current standards to improve product quality and user satisfaction. 

 

Professional Development and Adaptability 

  • Stay current with industry trends, accessibility standards, and tools. 
  • Experiment with emerging design methodologies and technologies to improve team capabilities. 
  • Adapt to evolving platforms, sectors, and user expectations across both utility and consulting contexts. 
  • Contribute to team culture by sharing insights, mentoring peers, and fostering design thinking.

Qualifications

  • Strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, and goals of VEIC.
  • Bachelor’s degree in UX design, human-computer interaction, graphic design, or a related field, plus 3+ years of UX design experience, or a similar combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to design user-centered experiences informed by research and usability principles.
  • Experience working on responsive websites, particularly in service-driven or public-facing contexts.
  • Proficiency in modern design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD). Our team leverages Figma.
  • Understanding of digital accessibility and inclusive design principles (WCAG, ADA compliance).
  • Strong visual design sensibility and attention to hierarchy, typography, and layout.
  • Comfortable managing multiple concurrent projects with varying scopes and timelines.
  • Experience collaborating across development and data platforms—including familiarity with web content management systems (Craft CMS experience a plus), ticketing and project management tools (Jira and Monday.com a plus), and digital analytics (GA4, Looker Studio a plus).
  • Collaborative, flexible, and curious—able to work fluidly across disciplines and project types.
  • Familiarity with designing for energy, sustainability, or regulated industries is a plus.
