Overview

Directs, manages, and oversees all aspects of marketing and communications work for the District of Columbia Sustainable Energy Solution (DCSEU) as dictated by the Managing Director, DCSEU. Understands the needs of the various departments within the DCSEU and is able to develop and implement marketing and communications strategies to effectively support each department. Communicates externally as needed and manages and supports relationships with key stakeholders and the media in support of the DCSEU’s marketing and communications goals while contributing to a mission-driven, innovative, creative, and stimulating work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Managing Director, DCSEU to establish and achieve the DCSEU’s marketing and communications strategies and goals.
  • Builds strong, credible, and trusted relationships with DCSEU staff, key stakeholders, and members of the media. Develops strategies and programs to support staff and stakeholders’ marketing and communications needs.
  • Facilitates the continuous process of planning and implementing an integrated approach to marketing and communications. In collaboration with the marketing and communications team, guides DCSEU staff and partners to consistently align messages and content with the DCSEU’s brand, policies, and objectives. Identifies opportunities to elevate the brand in support of goals.
  • Manages and participates as needed in interviews with the media and major public forums in support of the Managing Director, and Public Affairs staff, the client, and partners.
  • Provides leadership, guidance and direction to the DCSEU marketing and communications team. Mentors and develops team to ensure marketing and communications staff have skills needed to meet the needs of their customers and stakeholders.
  • Supervises all marketing and communications staff. Supervisory responsibilities include providing constructive feedback on an ongoing basis, setting work and professional development goals to maximize performance and quality, providing mentoring and coaching to staff to improve team effectiveness and growth opportunities, providing appropriate support in the case of performance problems, and staff recruitment and orientation.
  • Develops budgets, manages resources, and monitors the quality and quantity of staff and subcontractor resources to effectively and efficiently deliver marketing and communications services.
  • In collaboration with the marketing and communications team, measures and evaluates impact of marketing and communications programs and strategies to ensure their effectiveness.
  • Working collaboratively with VEIC Creative and Digital teams, and subcontractors as needed, oversees the development, implementation, performance, and optimization of campaigns and promotions.
  • Working collaboratively with VEIC Consumer Insights team, and subcontractors as needed, oversees and evaluates research and results in order to make marketing and communications-related recommendations.
  • Understands marketing and communications trends and best practices and applies these appropriately to meet the needs of the DCSEU.
  • Supports activities of other staff, groups, and divisions within VEIC as necessary to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, goals and values of VEIC.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant business field or a similar combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills were acquired.
  • Seven plus years’ experience in marketing and communications or related fields
  • Three plus years of management experience, including leadership, facilitation, staff supervision, resource management, contract management, budget management, and the ability to develop and attain goals.
  • The ability to communicate with credibility, approachability and reasonableness. Particularly important are:
    • Excellent listening skills
    • Excellent informing skills for a wide range of audiences
    • Excellent writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability in both leading, inspiring, and working within a team environment and supporting the needs of internal clients, partners and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability in working with agencies, media, and vendors.
  • Excellent ability to manage staff and subcontractor resources and work effectively across an organization with a focus on meeting customer needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement marketing and communication strategies. Ability to think creatively in the development and delivery of marketing and communications services.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Willingness and comfort with standing alone and making difficult decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to be organized, detail-oriented, accurate, and able to handle multiple tasks and competing priorities.

Working Conditions:

Internal - Office work is normally performed in either a home office or in VEIC’s climate-controlled office environment, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gases is very limited. Noise level is moderate and includes sounds of normal office equipment (computers, telephones, etc.).  No known environmental hazards are encountered in normal performance of office job duties. Depending on territory assignment, a remote work arrangement may be required or optional.

 

External - Less than 10% travel required.

Physical Demands:

Work involves standing and walking for brief periods of time, but most duties are performed from a seated position. There is potential for eyestrain from reading detailed materials and computer screen. Deadlines, workloads during peak periods and changing priorities may cause increased stress levels. Work may include occasional pushing, pulling, or carrying objects weighing of approximately 40 pounds such as files, documents, and some equipment. Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate computer keyboards at a moderate skill level. Repetitive motion injuries may occur. Company will provide adaptive devices as needed.
