The Account Manager – Level 1 (AM1)’s primary responsibility is to account manage retail and upstream partners in order to achieve defined energy savings goals.  Educates retailers and other assigned business partners on the benefits of partnering with the DC SEU and promoting both eligible products and programs to their customers. Utilizes a consultative customer engagement methodology that enables them to glean vital market information and present our services in a way that brings value to these partners and their customers.  Under the guidance of the Director, Account Management and other AMs, the AM1 works directly with small and mid-sized businesses to build business relationships that result in the discovery of efficiency opportunities and completion of projects.  Coordinates and participates in related partner and community outreach events, as assigned.


  • Develop and maintain positive, ongoing relationships with assigned accounts as well as other business partners and stakeholders within their region or account base. Conduct regular on-site visits to provide training on product technology, sales effectiveness, messaging and marketing support materials to our upstream partners.
  • Proactively assess and adjust strategies and contact frequency with assigned account base in order to maximize measurable savings and ensure DC SEU resources are commensurate with the yield derived from these accounts. Leverage relationships with high-performing partners while effectively and efficiently managing marginal contributors.
  • Deliver ongoing field and market intelligence to the appropriate Program group, in order to promote and enhance the sale of ENERGY STAR and energy efficient products through partners serving residential, commercial and industrial customers. Ability to understand the unique needs, opportunities and barriers of individual accounts and targeted market segments in order to deliver an effective value proposition and services resulting in measurable savings and participation in DC SEU programs.
  • Be knowledgeable about the technology and benefits of energy efficiency products, programs and services that the DC SEU promotes through its retailer and upstream partnerships. Maintain this knowledge and expertise in energy efficiency products and services through attendance at training sessions and completion of training exercises.
  • Help to identify, organize and conduct events and outreach with retail and upstream partners. Events may involve weekend work, making presentations or engaging with diverse trade or business groups.  Track retail partner interactions, sales and inventory levels using both internal and external contact management and reporting automation tools. 
  • Work with business and residential market teams, and other staff as necessary, to collect and disseminate retail and upstream partner information that can contribute to meeting DC SEU’s contractual goals.
  • Gather market information, including, but not limited to ENERGY STAR product sales data, product inventory and pricing.
  • Coordinate with other Account Managers to identify opportunities for savings among businesses within AM’s territory. Effectively communicate with co-workers to assist in developing the opportunities and track progress towards measurable savings goals.
  • Coordinate with Marketing, Efficient Products, as well as other internal individuals and groups on a daily basis.
  • Contribute to business projects by looking for and identifying potential projects, initiating conversations with partners and relaying lead information back to VEIC staff.
  • Provide support to the activities of VEIC as necessary to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.


  • Strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, goals and values of VEIC and the DC SEU.
  • Associates degree in business or marketing and two years’ experience in a professional work environment, or a similar combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired. Retail or training experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in sales, customer service, and basic consultative engagement skills.
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills, including comfort and ability to professionally conduct educational and persuasive group presentations.
  • Proficiency with contact management, word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
  • Ability to handle competing priorities and proven ability to be organized, detail-oriented and accurate.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain ongoing client commitment and bring projects to closure.
  • Familiarity or interest in learning the features and benefits of energy efficiency technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to be organized, detail-oriented, accurate, and able to independently handle multiple projects, associated tasks and competing priorities in a remote work arrangement.
  • A valid DC driver’s license and compliance with the Motor Vehicle Safety guidelines outlined in VEIC’s personnel policies.
  • Residents of the District of Columbia preferred.
