Overview

The Communications and Content Strategist works directly with the Director of Marketing and Communications to develop and manage the DCSEU’s marketing content strategy to attract and engage internal and external stakeholders, customers, and influencers. The Communications and Content Strategist will use their strategic and creative skills to refine, enhance, and drive brand and program awareness, and promote the DCSEU through content they develop for earned, owned, and shared media channels. The Communications and Content Strategist will be based in DC and will support marketing and communication initiatives for VEIC’s work on the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU).

Responsibilities

Marketing Content Strategy and Development

  • Manages the DCSEU’s content strategy and content calendar across earned, shared, and owned media channels.
  • Oversees and maintains content editorial and production calendars for copy and design assets, and ensures content aligns with strategy and brand guidelines.
  • Oversees the development of clear and engaging content that is consistent with the DCSEU's brand and addresses both DCSEU goals and consumer needs; serves as a content developer and final-eyes on team-produced content.
  • Collaborates with internal and external creative resources, such as copywriters and graphic designers, to create print and digital content for various media channels.
  • Works closely with staff, stakeholders, customers, and program participants to identify and develop engaging stories and content, which includes interviewing customers, contractors, and others and visiting project sites and events.
  • Researches market trends in energy efficiency and renewable energy to inform content strategy and development.
  • Identifies stories and content that have earned media potential and works closely with public relations resources on pitching stories to news media.
  • Assists with media outreach efforts including strategy, pitching, media list research/development, managing incoming media requests, and interview coordination.
  • Supports the development of DCSEU official performance reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Ensures that work product is well-researched; on-brand; consistent in style, quality and tone of voice; optimized for channel and audience; and creates the desired impact.
  • Identifies new and unique opportunities to increase DCSEU brand awareness through paid, earned, owned, and shared media channels.

 

Website and Digital Content Management

  • Manages the DCSEU’s social media and blog as part of their work managing the content strategy and the content calendar.
  • Responsible for the development and distribution of DCSEU monthly Energy Saver
  • Regularly monitors and updates the DCSEU website to ensure accurate content and information, including program content updates, seasonal changes, and the DCSEU’s external events calendar.

Events

  • Supports DCSEU virtual and external events, representing DCSEU marketing and communications team for content collection and PR event logistics, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, goals and values of VEIC.
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 to 3 years of marketing, communications, or content development experience or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to translate complex topics and information for broader audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability in working/collaborating within a team and supporting the needs of internal clients, designers, media, and vendors.
  • Experience managing marketing production processes, and collaborating with copywriters, designers, web developers, and other creative resources.
  • Understanding of marketing analytics and the ability to make meaning out of performance data and customer research.
  • Proven time management, organizational and problem-solving skills; the ability to juggle and meet multiple deadlines at once.
  • The ability to troubleshoot challenges as they arise with a problem-solving, positive mindset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience in making presentations.
  • Computer skills including proficiency with word processing, project management software, spreadsheets, and MS Office.
  • Experience with web content management systems and email marketing platforms.
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, Canva, and experience using a DSLR camera, is desired but not essential.
  • Experience with or interest in sustainability, environmental, and/or energy issues also desired.
