    The Public Relations Specialist is responsible for contributing to the planning, research and development, and execution of public relations and communications strategies and materials for the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU). This position communicates externally and helps manage relationships with key stakeholders, policymakers, and the media in support of public relations goals. Assists the Marketing and Communications Manager and the Mid-Atlantic General Manager in all aspects of public relations and communications. Works collaboratively with the Marketing & PR department on planning earned media strategy and outreach.

    • Manages and provides support for a variety of public relations projects. Activities in this area may include executing story pitches to media; proactive and reactive management of public relations issues; analysis of policy issues relevant to interests; developing issue briefings for stakeholders; and supporting responses to elected official inquiries.
    • Manages and provides support for communications objectives, including assisting with development of communications strategies; a wide variety of writing needs (press releases, columns, advisories, and supporting materials); interacts with the media as needed (story pitching, follow-up, and other needs as required).
    • Supports other communications needs as required, in areas such as external reporting and presentations, talking points, internal staff communications, grant proposals, awards proposals, providing guidance on organizational communications standards, and editing a variety of written materials.
    • Manages, drafts, and delivers the DCSEU’s required monthly and quarterly reporting to the Client, and collaborates with the Marketing and Communications team on writing and delivering the DCSEU’s Annual Report.
    • Manages internal research, review, and planning requirements for successful execution of public relations strategies and objectives.
    • Assists the Mid-Atlantic General Manager and Managing Director in cultivating and maintaining high-level relationships with media, policy makers, and other stakeholders.
    • Works with the Mid-Atlantic General Manager, Managing Director, Marketing and Communications Manager, and other staff to monitor public affairs issues and supports stakeholder outreach and engagement, including strategy, planning, scheduling, tracking, and follow-up.
    • Facilitates collaboration across staff to align messaging and content consistent with organizational policies, public relations and communications objectives.
    • Represents the DCSEU and VEIC in a variety of public forums, as required.
    • Supports activities of other staff and divisions within as is necessary to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.


    • Strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, goals, and values of VEIC.
    • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
    • Three years of professional experience in public relations, advocacy, external communications, and /or related fields, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
    • Superior written and oral communication skills.
    • Demonstrated excellence in ability to influence individuals and groups, including building constructive and effective positive relationships through use of diplomacy, strategy, political savvy, tact and patience.
    • Demonstrated excellence in all forms of written and oral communication, including the proven ability to work effectively with members of the media in advancing public relations goals and strategies.
    • Experience with the use of online and social media tools to advance organizational communications goals.
    • Experience with media monitoring applications such as Meltwater.
    • Proven ability to be self-motivated, detail-oriented, accurate, and able to successfully manage multiple tasks and competing priorities.
    • Proven track record and commitment to work, learn, and grow in a large organizational environment.
    • Strong team and collaborative work skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a support role, respecting guidance and direction.
    • Experience and capability with Microsoft Office applications.

    Working Conditions:

    Internal - Work is normally performed in climate controlled office environment, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gases is very limited. Noise level is moderate and includes sounds of normal office equipment (computers, telephones, etc.).  No known environmental hazards are encountered in normal performance of job duties.

    External - Occasional travel to Vermont may be required.  Occasional long hours may be required.
